Start Sailing

Discover or rediscover the joy of sailing

While CYC is not a certified RYA Sail Training club, we are keen to encourage new sailors to start exploring sailing or helping those who have sailed before get back into the sport.

You can easily access sail training in either dinghies or cruising yachts locally.

Our kindred sailing clubs at Llandudno SC, and Y Felinheli | Port Dinorwic SC are both RYA Sail Training clubs.

In addition, we are lucky to have the National Outdoor Centre for Wales at Plas Menai which offers a wide variety of training in sailing.

For those wanting to explore larger boat sailing we support the RYA Sailing School, BOOM Sailing, based in Conwy Marina.

At CYC we offer a number of opportunities for people wanting to start sailing or progress their skills.

Come Sailing with the CODs!

If you’ve never been on a sailing boat before but would like to give it a try, a taster sail on a Conway One Design is a great way to see what all the fuss is about. The Conway One Design is more stable than dinghies and you are very unlikely to end up in the water. 

The CODs need more hands on sailing than their big sisters, the Cruisers, so there’s more going for all the crew. Find out more about keelboat sailing from the RYA.

Come for a taster sail with an experienced skipper on one of our vintage racing keelboats. You do not need to be a club member and no experience is necessary.

If you have some sailing experience and can commit to sailing with us regularly, skippers are always on the lookout for crew.

To book a place, register your interest by joining the COD Sailing Crew WhatsApp group.

  • Send your details including your mobile phone number to: CODSailing@ConwayYachtClub.com
  • Check out the dates and start times on the Club Sailing programme.
  • Let us know through the WhatsApp Group which day you would like to sail with us.
  • We will confirm back when you have a place reserved.
  • We will then confirm on the week of sailing that the sail is going ahead.
